Students participate in Haiti fundraising drive

The kids were almost oblivious to the heat of the midday sun while, carrying “Support Haiti victims!” posters and placards, convinced motorists to give whatever amount they can spare for the Haiti victims.

“These are 9th and 12th graders,” said Rachel Ngiruos one of the teachers who were supervising the kids. “We’re here to help the Red Cross and the Office of the President collect funds for the Haiti earthquake victims.”

She said people are very willing to help. “Some would just give us some money on the side of the road. Some would drive into the area where the Red Cross booth was located and give their donations. I think we’re attracting the public and getting their support.”

The school also did the same thing to the Taiwan typhoon victims last year. “It was also successful,” Teacher Ngiruos shared. “We collected around $4,000 for that drive.”

Lily Oilouch, another teacher who handles Social Studies and World Geography classes, said the kids were hesitant at first to participate. “But after a while, they started having a good time,” she noted. “Maybe because of the weather, it’s a good time to be outside and do this.”

Every period, another batch of students would go out to the streets and spend their class period convincing, urging or simply giving awareness to motorists about the Haiti tragedy.

Although some donors sometimes gave their names to the teachers or students so they can get their receipts at a later time, most of the time, they wanted to remain anonymous.
