The donation, according to Taiwan Ambassador to Palau, Maggie T. Tien, is part mutual effort between Palau and Taiwan to promote the health of the people by assuring that healthy local produce not only is abundant but also is accessible and affordable; and to further enhance the relationship between the two countries.
Taiwan has, over the years, contributed to the development of Palau in terms of its infrastructure – road construction, agricultural developments, aquaculture developments, medical and health advancements, and professional consultations and trainings.Taiwan has funneled millions of dollars to fund most of Palau’s recent infrastructure projects – the state economic stimulus packages for roads, docks, and construction of buildings.Ambassador Tien presented a sample of the donation of taro to MOE minister, Masa-Aki Emesiochl, and MOE Food Service Program Manager, Veronica Kazuo during a brief ceremony at the Taiwan Embassy office in Koror.The donation of taro – all of which are genetically purified species of local taro – was cultivated at and harvested from the Taiwan-Palau Agriculture Technical Mission at Nekken, Aimeliik.The bulk of the donation be given to MOE today and will, according to Tien, will be distributed to the schools, particularly to the schools with established affiliation with Taiwan Embassy.
