Tinian Head Start Center renamed after retired educator

RETIRED educator Magdalena Muna Manglona Hofschneider on Thursday witnessed Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider, in his capacity as acting governor, sign Senate Bill 22-59 which renames Tinian Head Start/Early Head Start Center in her honor.

Authored by the Senate president himself, S.B. 22-59 is now Public Law 22-20, and the center in San Jose, Tinian is now called Magdalena Muna Manglona Hofschneider Head Start/Early Head Start Center, “in recognition and appreciation of her outstanding contributions to the CNMI Head Start Program and to the community of Tinian.”

P.L. 22-20 mandates PSS and the Tinian mayor, in consultation with Magdalena Hofschneider, to prepare a plan of dedication including, at a minimum, the construction and placement of a sign, with an appropriate ceremony in an ideal designated area of the facility within a reasonable time after the effective date of the Act.

Also attending the signing ceremony were acting Tinian Mayor Joseph E. Santos, Sen. Karl King-Nabors, Rep. Patrick H. San Nicolas, Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada, Board of Education member Antonio L. Borja, and PSS Head Start Director Lathania DLG Angui.

The new law noted that Magdalena Hofschneider “selflessly served over 20 years in educating the youth of Tinian, which all began in 1954 when she was hired as a classroom teacher in the Tinian public school where she diligently served for several years.  She worked diligently with former Tinian Mayor Jose R. Cruz to renovate an old chapel and use it for the pilot program that eventually became Head Start Program in 1970.”

P.L. 22-20 further states that Magdalena Hofschneider “has contributed many years to serving the needs of the young minds of her community. Despite the challenges that came along this journey, the gratification of witnessing young residents grow and mature into members that now serve their community fueled the drive and passion of Ms. Hofschneider as an educator.”
