Toribiong to meet with Clinton

Toribiong told reporters that it is anticipated that he and Secretary Clinton will discuss a number of topics.

He said that during the meeting he will ask for Clinton’s support in the internal discussions the U.S. is having relating to the Compact review.“I will stress the long and friendly relationship between Palau and the U.S. as evidenced by the numerous Palauans who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Services,” Toribiong said.Toribiong  said that he will be personally involved in the upcoming Compact of Free Association review between Palau and the United States government but would want to be make known of  a schedule for the government talks.In an earlier letter to Clinton,  Toribiong said that the Compact review is the administration’s priority.“My highest priority is to deepen the relationship between our countries as we begin a formal review of our relationship in compliance with our now 15 year old Compact of Free Association. The outcome of this review will impact the lives of every Palauan and I intend to be personally involved,” Toribiong said.He said that the review needs to be expedited since there is a need for a congressional action by Oct. 1, 2009. Toribiong said the review of the Compact  with the United States will the first and highest priority  of his administration.He said he will also be visiting U.S. officials and members of the U.S. Congress in his trip.The president said he will be accompanied by State Minister Sandra Pierantozzi, U.S. Ambassador Hersey Kyota, UN Ambassador Stuart Beck, Dr. Victor Yano to the trip.
