Typhoon-force conditions loom within 48 hours

NWS– In a weather update, a typhoon watch has been issued for Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). The US National Weather Service warned residents to brace themselves for potentially damaging winds as the cyclone approaches. Damaging winds, defined as sustained winds of 39 mph or greater, are expected to hit the region within the next 48 hours.

The tropical disturbance, identified as 02W, is currently drifting in a north-northwest direction with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. Forecasters anticipate that the storm will maintain this course while gradually picking up speed over the weekend, steadily gaining strength in the process. There is a possibility that 02W will intensify into a tropical storm tonight, and it is predicted to pass perilously close to, or possibly over, the Mariana Islands early next week, somewhere between Guam and Saipan.

While uncertainties persist regarding the precise trajectory and timeline of 02W’s intensification, there is an increasing likelihood that it will traverse the Marianas as a full-fledged typhoon. As a result, residents of Guam and the CNMI are strongly advised to take this weather system seriously. Conditions surrounding this depression are expected to evolve rapidly over the next 48 hours, necessitating utmost vigilance and preparedness.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have initiated necessary precautions to ensure public safety. Residents are urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and heed any evacuation orders or other directives issued by relevant authorities.
