Vanuatu gov’t silent over calls to discuss threats against journalists

Since Sato Kilman’s government took office in mid-December, there have been two incidents in which journalists have been threatened by politicians, the most recent involving a cabinet minister trying to stop reports of his arrest for drunkenness.

Media Association president Evelyne Toa says there’s been no response to this week’s statement condemning the behavior of ni-Vanuatu minister, Pastor Don Ken.

Toa says it’s discouraging that the government is seemingly unwilling to broach the issue of threats.

“And not only that we have other internal issues to raise with the government but we’re still waiting. And we hope the Kilman government or some of his offices, you know, find the time for us, for the media association, just to sit and discuss issues with them,” Toa said.
