Victim’s mom testifies in sexual assault trial

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The trial for a man accused of sexually assaulting a teen since she was 7 is underway in the Superior Court of Guam.

Gregorio Trio Denamarquez Jr., 40, stands accused of five counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct as first-degree felonies after a 16-year-old girl in April 2022 accused Denamarquez of sexually assaulting her on several occasions since she was 7 years old.

On Monday morning before Judge Vernon Perez, Denamarquez’s attorney, William Gavras, questioned the girl’s mother, who continued her testimony from Friday.

During her testimony, the girl’s mother was emotional as she needed to hold back tears at times when being questioned by Gavras, but she was able to give detailed answers about the incidents in question.

According to court documents, the girl accused Denamarquez of having her sit on Denamarquez’s lap multiple times, and she said he would molest her while she would massage him. Denamarquez also massaged the child while sexually assaulting her.

As part of his line of questioning, Gavras asked the girl’s mother about a visit she made with her daughter to the Office of the Attorney General and overheard her daughter’s interview with a prosecutor where she stated Denamarquez had a history of abusing his family.

However, the girl’s mother, who resided in the same home as Denamarquez, believed that was not true.

“You’ve never seen him hit his son, and no one’s complained about that?” Gavras asked.

“No,” the girl’s mother replied, detailing she confronted her daughter about giving the statement.

“‘Why would you open something like that?’ Guess what she answered, … ‘I’d rather have him in jail than to have the kids have a dad like that,’” the girl’s mother added.

Confirmation

While the mother testified about other times she believed her daughter was lying about incidents, in particular at school with a student who she accused of inappropriately touching her but was discovered to have tripped and touched her accidentally, prosecutor Sean Brown confirmed in his questioning about the incidents Denamarquez is being charged with.

“Mr. Denamarquez has put your daughter on his lap at least seven times, correct?” Brown asked.

“Yes,” the mother replied.

“Mr. Denamarquez and your daughter were massaging each other often in your house, correct?” Brown asked.

“It’s not often. … As far as I recall, it’s like five times he has, but (Denamarquez’s wife) was there,” the girl’s mother answered.
