ASAHI is off to a great start in the Liberation Day Softball Tournament after defeating Angkaur 8-5 on Sunday at the Dandan baseball field.
Asahi and Angkaur were evenly matched in the first inning as neither team could put a run in.
In the second inning, however, Angkaur broke the silence as its players took advantage of the errors made by Asahi allowing Jess Takai to reach home.
Asahi tried to kill Angkaur’s momentum with two consecutive outs, but during Asahi’s attempt for the third out, Angkaur’s Mike Guerrero touched home plate off a fielder’s choice to put Angkaur ahead 2-0.
Fortunately for Asahi, they were able to even the score thanks to Dom Hideo and Garry.
At the bottom of the fourth, Asahi unleashed one hit after another to fill the bases. Ebeh Sibetang then scored an RBI double to bring in Hideo and Darwin Masaru.
Joining the scoring spree were Garry and Adri as Asahi took the lead, 7-2.
Angkaur tried to tighten their defense but still left an opening through which Asahi slipped one more run at the bottom of the fifth inning to extend its lead, 8-2.
Angkaur had one more chance to stay alive at the top of the sixth as Tylor Jermaine’s three-run homer reduced the gap.
But Asahi made sure that it would not let the win slip away by securing the third and final out to triumph 8-5.
Redmen vs Hagu Lamun
Joining the winner’s circle were the Redmen who outlasted Hagu Lamun 13-10.
Although Hagu Lamun started strong with three runs in the opening inning highlighted by Dennis and Jerome’s homeruns, the Redmen retaliated with 10 runs to quickly grasp control.
Jun Reyes stole the spotlight with a grandslam bringing in Letty, Jamie, Joe and himself while Greg, Mike, Jason and John joined the assault to stretch the gap even further 10-3.
But Hagu Lamun performed a great job defensively as they left the Redmen scoreless in the next two innings.
Hagu Lamun then slowly made their way back into the game, scoring three runs at the top of the fourth and two more runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, 10-10.
However, at the bottom of the sixth inning, Redmen’s Jun hit a two-run homer while Greg reached home for a total of three runs to secure the win over Hagu Lamun, 13-10.
PeLeLiu vs Pacific Auto
The third win of the day was claimed by PeLeLiu which overpowered Pacific Auto 20-6.
PeLeLiu was led by Ben Hocog who contributed two homeruns, including a three-run homer and a two-run homer in the first and third innings while team-mate Manny Villagomez’s grandslam helped secure victory.
PeLeLiu’s Mabel Ngrigemelas reaches 1st base safely for the single during a Belau Amateur Softball League game at the Dandan baseball field.
