WHEN it comes to fitness, it’s best to start early, said Jerry Diaz, a certified personal trainer for Gold’s Gym and a special education teacher.

“Growing up in my teen years, I experienced quality fitness activities with my school’s physical education teachers,” he added. “They also motivated me to do well academically in order to participate in interscholastic competitions.”

Diaz has already worked with countless teen clients throughout his years as a personal trainer. They include the NMI National Soccer Team members and the Miss Teen/Miss Marianas contestants.

He said the first step for a minor client is to get parental consent.

Diaz said parents must provide relevant background information about their children. If parents are concerned about their children’s fitness, they should  consult a doctor, he added.

As for teens who are overweight, Diaz said they should start slowly. He also believes that teens with a chronic health condition or disability should not be excluded from fitness activities. They can  perform fitness activities that are safe and enjoyable, he added. But again, their parents must consult a doctor first.

Diaz’s fitness programs for teens  include movement principles and aerobic training such as calisthenics, dancing, running and swimming.

He wants his teen clients to focus on body weight movements that will help strengthen their joints, tendons and bone structure without the intense pressure of high resistance.

As teens become young adults, they will be better prepared for higher level and intensive movements, Diaz added.

He said once teens get started with their fitness program, they will enjoy the benefits of improved emotional well-being, reduced stress, increased energy, and flexibility.
