Kang rules McDonald’s Golf Classic

MCDONALD’S inaugural Golf Classic champion, JJ Atalig, missed this year’s event but three other golfers in the 2nd Annual Golf Classic on Saturday played as good as he did last year and ended in a tie for first place.

Kang Sun Ho, Dung Tenorio and Jin Feng Chun shot 75 on the sprawling east course of LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort amid a 30 mile-per-hour gust of wind.

Kang broke the tie and won the title because he shot a birdie on Hole No. 11.

Jin started strong on the front nine and scored par on Hole No. 11 to finish second while Tenorio made a bogey and settled for third place.

Kang, who placed second last year, said “the weather was really good today.”

Tenorio didn’t make it to the top three last year. On Saturday, he three-putted three times on the front nine and “that was what killed me.”

The wind was “so strong,” he said. On the back nine, he had three birdies, but these were offset by three bogeys.

But he was still happy with his score, Tenorio said.

Fifteen-year-old Li Zhi Yun, the youngest golfer in the event, finished fourth with a score of 76. He started off hot but teed off short on Hole No. 6.

Also playing in the championship flight were Tim Goodwin and Freddy Salavaria who were tied at 78; Nathan Camacho, 79; Jay Muna, 80; Wan Sub Lee, 81; Freddie Cataluna, 85; and Paul Kaipat, 98.

The fundraising tournament was organized by the Jose and Ruri Ayuyu Foundation Inc. which will donate the net proceeds to Make-A-Wish Foundation, Karidat, Salvation Army and the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
