KHS, MHS bag volleyball wins

KAGMAN and Marianas high schools won their matches in the Public School System Boys High School Volleyball Tournament Wednesday at the MHS gym.

KHS earned their first win of the season as their chemistry outshined Saipan Southern High School 2, 21-14, 22-20.

KHS did not focus on setting up the play, but instead relied on the element of surprise to get the better of SSHS.

KHS controlled the pace early in the first set as they continuously applied pressure with quick spike returns and well-timed blocks.

Although SSHS withstood many of the incoming attacks, their lack of communication allowed KHS to win the first set, 21-14.

SSHS learned from their mistakes in the second half as they were more in sync with tighter defense and aggressive offense. With every point that KHS made, SSHS was able to answer on the other end.

However, in the last few possessions, KHS’s persistence paid off as they collected the points needed to win the second set, 22-20, and the match.

Winner’s circle

Joining the winner’s circle were Marianas High School’s teams 1 and 2.

MHS 1 went up against Saipan International School 1 and established dominance in the first set with a 21-8 victory.

SIS 1 managed to shake off the jitters and put up a fight in the second set, but MHS 1 stood their ground and successfully defended their end of the court to win the set and the match, 21-18.

MHS 2, for their part, outlasted MHS 3, 21-16, 21-19.

But against Mount Carmel School 1, MHS 2 fell short, 20-22, 21-9, 15-7.

SIS came out victorious in their second match of the day, defeating SSHS 1, 21-13, 8-21, 17-15.
