KLIQ beats KLAL to win softball championship

KLIQ came from behind to defeat KLAL twice and win the championship of the Budweiser King of the Diamond Labor Day Softball Tournament presented by Roil Soil Marketing on Monday at the Capital Hill ballfield.

KLAL was undefeated during the tournament’s preliminary rounds, but in the championship, KLIQ  put up a fight.

In game one, KLIQ was the first to break the silence with a solo homerun by Eli. Teammate TK then followed up with a second homer.

KLIQ’s lead continued to grow with Teno, Tony, Babes and Poland scoring runs  to give their team a 6-0 advantage.

KLAL’s Kimo hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning, but KLIQ delivered four more runs in the top of the fourth to further stretch their lead, 10-1.

Then in the fifth and sixth innings, KLAL suddenly found their second wind and displayed excellent defensive feats while scoring three runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, KLAL exploded with five more runs to trail by just one point, 9-10.

KLAL’s Sus fired a three-run homer to finally give his team the lead, 12-10, but KLIQ notched four runs in the eighth inning to win the game, 14-12, and force a second and final match.

Game 2

 KLIQ drew first blood with two runs in the first inning and three more in the second while KLAL squeezed in four runs  to trail by one, 4-5.

KLIQ tried to move forward by slipping a single homerun in the top of the third, but KLAL answered with a two-run homer courtesy of Shane to tie the game, 6-6.

Then in the bottom of the sixth inning, KLAL ignited a six-run onslaught to establish control, 12-7.

But KLIQ had other ideas.

In the top of the seventh,  KLIQ’s Tony safely reached the home plate while teammate Eli connected a three-run homer followed by Thizz reaching home as their team bagged five consecutive runs to tie the game, 12-12.

KLIQ continued to deliver with two more runs in the eighth inning while KLAL could only make one.

KLIQ won the game, 14-13, and the championship.

It was an incredible accomplishment for KLIQ which played three straight games coming off the loser’s bracket to face an undefeated team in the championship.

KLIQ received the championship trophy and the $1,000 first prize while KLAL brought home the second-place trophy and $750 cash.
