30th Island Relay on Saturday

The race will consist of three divisions — open, youth, and singles — and will run for 13.7 miles from Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio to the Last Command Post in Marpi.

“Normally, the event is set the following weekend after Christmas. However because both weekends are either the Christmas eve/day or New Years eve/day, we feel that it would be better to have it before Christmas for this year,” said organizer James Lee in an email.

Registration starts at 5 a.m. and the race starts at 6 a.m. Entry fee is $25 per team or $10 for solo runners.

Participants will compete in mixed teams of five runners who will alternate through one mile stages. One member of the team must either be 16 years old or younger, 40 years old or older, or a female.

Mamiko and Joshua Berger, Stu Smith, and Jack Kabiriel, and Vinnie Inos of the ‘Mami’s Boys’ won last year’s event in one hour, 29 minutes, and 10 seconds.

Keum Bae Ji and Noriko Jim ruled the men and women’s solo category with 1:41:10 and 1:52:20, respectively.
