$6500, Harley Davidson up for grabs

The Memorial Golf Classic is scheduled to kick off this Saturday at Marianas Country Club. Registrations start at 6 am and shot gun will follow an hour later at 7 a.m. The golf tournament will follow the Double Peoria system.

According to Wikipedia “The Peoria System allows a “handicap allowance” to be determined and then applied to each golfer’s score. The tournament committee secretly selects six holes.

These are usually two par 3s, two par 4s and two par 5s, and often one of each type per nine (one par 3 on the front, the other on the back nine). Competitors do not know which holes have been selected.

Groups then tee off and complete their rounds, playing stroke play and scoring in the normal fashion with one exception: double par is the maximum (i.e., 8 is the maximum score on a par-4). Following completion of play, the six Peoria holes are announced.

Each player totals his six secret holes. That total is multiplied by 3; par is subtracted from that total; then the resulting number is multiplied by 80 percent.

This is the player’s allowance. The allowance is subtracted from the player’s gross score and the result is the net Peoria System score.”

The tournament fee will only be $85.00 for all interested participants. The entrance fee will also include the tournament banquet, a total of $1,500.00 in cash for the 1st-10th place winners.

Coordinator Ben Babauta has recently announced that $5,000 is up for grabs from Traders Insurance Corporation and a brand new Harley Davidson Motorcycle from American Iron Horse/Island Equipment Rental for one of the hole-in-one prizes.

It was also established that among the other awards already out there for all of the players, the Closest to the Pin contest will be added to the lineup as well.

Hole sponsors are as follows: Kautz Glass Company, Kristo Rai Church, Rota Merchandising Co./D.K. Brothers Co. Inc., Saipan Health Clinic/St. Jude Renal Care, YCO Corporation, Songao Enterprises, Henry K. The awards banquet will be held immediately after the tournament. All golfers, golf players, and weekend hackers are invited for this event to participate in remembering the late Father Manny Corcuera and how he was very active in the golfing community.
