WE sometimes lose sight of the reason why we do what we do, which usually results in our falling off the wagon. However, when we are enjoying the activity, then it doesn’t feel like a chore.

Rhine Russell, a Zumba dance instructor at Gold’s Gym Saipan,  mixes her passion for dancing with her fitness goals to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“I’ve found that combining hip-hop dancing and Zumba in my fitness routine is the perfect way to maintain my desired physical appearance,” she said. “When I have extra time, I always choose to hit the gym to tone my body. It’s all about finding what works for you and sticking to it!”

Russell sees dancing as a powerful tool that can transform one’s physical and mental health. “It can enhance our cardiovascular health, flexibility, coordination, balance, relieve stress and elevate our mood. It’s a balanced approach to fitness that engages both body and mind. Personally, dancing has been my source of strength and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.”

The Health and Fitness Content Creator winner of the 2024 SoMe Awards, Russell said her love for dancing started in the Philippines where her family constantly encouraged her to dance at parties. “It wasn’t until I learned about SMADS in Saipan that my passion for dancing truly ignited,” she said referring to the Saipan Music & Dance Studio.

“The people I met there — the managers and dancers — became like family to me and inspired me to join the fun,” she added. “Their passion was contagious, and it encouraged me to become a part of the dance community. Now, I hope to inspire others to join in on the fun and find their passion for dance.”

Jerry Diaz, a National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer, agrees.

“Dancing has many health benefits,” he said. “Many professional coaches and trainers talk about finding the zone. The body and mind find a balance of blood flowing into the heart and muscles while accessing energy-creating addictive endorphins that will motivate the individual to continue with the activity and repeat it again and again, which again will result in our desired fitness and athletic results.”

Russell and Diaz believe that dancing is for everyone.

“To encourage others to embrace fitness and dancing, I’d say: Dive in with an open mind and heart, embrace the joy of movement, and find a style that resonates with you,” Russell said. “Whether it’s salsa, hip-hop, ballet, or any other form, let the music move you and enjoy the journey toward a healthier, happier you.”
