Carey conquers first MTB race

Carey pushed through the 15 kilometer up hill course and finished 16th place out of 485 participants. “It was a fun and great experience and good warm up for [Xterra] MAUI,” said Carey, who finished the MTB race in two hours and 32 minutes.

The race also offered 100K and 120K courses, which Carey hopes to compete in next year.

Prior to the race, Carey was busy training in Caloundra, Australia with Allan Collinson and Julia Lendvai. She will spend the next month preparing herself for the Xterra World Championship in Maui, Hawaii.

Carey will be a returning to Maui as a veteran. She finished 18th place in the women’s division’s pro rankings with a time of 3:35:44 during last year’s Xterra World Championship at Maui.

The event will feature an off-road terrain combining a 1.5K swim that starts at Makena Beach and Golf Resort, a 32K bike ride along the slopes of Haleakala, and a 12K run along lava rock, forest trails, and beach sand.

In 2009 Carey competed alongside 550 competitors, which included 75 professionals and 475 amateurs who represented 22 countries and 35 American states.
