Siblings’ dedication pays off as both claim national titles in Arizona

Jesse and Roman Concepcion, who trace their roots back to Saipan, made their mark on the national stage last week in Mesa, Arizona, at the US Open Muay Thai. Together, they out-fought the competition, each coming away with a coveted national title and proving just how far hard work and family support can go.
The brothers checked another milestone as each claimed a prestigious national title belt from Nov. 20 to 23, showcasing their skills and making a name for themselves at the competition.
Their paths to gold highlighted their distinctive fighting styles, tactical adaptation, and approach.
Jesse’s championship bout was swift and decisive, ending in a TKO just one minute into the first of three scheduled 90-second rounds. Overcoming pre-fight jitters, he turned his anxiety into focus once he touched gloves with opponent Oliver Salcido. “My opponent came forward aggressively, and that immediately switched me into fight mode,” he recalled. Jesse countered with immediate pressure and a relentless attack that proved too much, prompting the referee to stop the contest as Salcido could no longer continue.
For younger brother Roman, his match went the full distance of three 90-second rounds, earning a unanimous decision win over Beau Kelly.
Roman’s contest quickly became a test of his adaptability, with a last-minute rule change disallowing headshots and forcing a shift in strategy. After receiving a warning for a high blow, Roman and his coach pivoted. “My coach and I made a last-minute adjustment, shifting our game plan to rely heavily on my kicks,” Roman explained. “I was determined to stay composed, control the clinch, and execute the new strategy. Thankfully, everything came together and I earned the win.”
The double-gold victory was a product of the fighters’ dedication. Jesse summed up the moment: “Winning the national titles felt incredible. I went into the tournament with a clear mindset and a promise to myself that I would bring a belt home.” Roman echoed, “It felt amazing. In that moment, I could really feel the payoff of all the effort and dedication we’ve put into training. It was truly a rewarding experience.”
When asked about the secret to their success, the answer was unanimous. The brothers train six days a week, maintaining a demanding routine that leaves little room for a typical social life—but they don’t mind. “To be honest, we don’t really have a social life—and that’s okay with us,” said Jesse. Their dedication is matched by extraordinary sacrifices from their parents. “We even moved mid–school year, thousands of miles away from what used to be home, because they believed a new gym would help us reach our goals,” Jesse added.
Although most parents don’t encourage their children to pursue contact sports, especially at a young age, their mom and dad are immensely proud, emphasizing their role in providing opportunity and support while true success comes from their sons’ consistency, willpower, and determination.
Their mother said, “It’s always a little difficult to watch them fight because you want to protect your kids, but I also know exactly what they are capable of. They work so hard and watching them accomplish their goals leaves me speechless.” Their father added, “I was incredibly proud. I actually lost my voice cheering them on throughout the tournament. Seeing them perform the way they did filled me with so much pride. We can support them, but once they step into the ring, it’s all them. That’s where we can’t help—and they rise to the moment every time.”
Beyond the medals, one of the most meaningful moments for the family is seeing the brothers represent their roots. Born in Saipan, the boys proudly carry the island flag after each victory, a powerful symbol of heritage. “It means so much to us. They were born in Saipan, and they take great pride in letting others know where they come from. Not many people know about Saipan, and I’m proud my sons are helping represent their roots on a national stage,” said their father.
With four national titles secured, the brothers have set their sights on the pinnacle of professional martial arts, sharing a goal to keep making a name for themselves both nationally and internationally.
“My dream is to eventually earn the attention of major professional promotions like ONE Championship,” Jesse said. Roman agreed, “My goals are the same. Over the next few years, my brother and I just hope to continue building our reputations and proving ourselves on bigger stages.”
The Concepcion brothers’ success at the US Open Muay Thai was more than a tournament win—it was another crucial step in their high-stakes journey from their island home to the world stage of professional combat sports.
