JTM upsets Blue Haus in Unity Cup thriller, captures U18 basketball crown

The Al’i MadFlex/E-Sports Unity Cup championship game delivered the breathtaking matchup spectators had hoped for, as JTM pulled off a monumental upset, dethroning the heavily favored Blue Haus, 80-76, to claim the U18 title at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym on Sunday night.

The tension was palpable as JTM—a team that had struggled in previous matchups against Blue Haus during the regular season—delivered an extraordinary performance in the finals.

The first half intensified quickly, with both teams engaged in a physical battle and several lead changes. Blue Haus’ Dane Tibayan started hot, draining back-to-back shots from beyond the arc, while Vargas made an impact with strong finishes at the rim, contributing nine points.

On the other end, JTM kept pace with Marc Tengco and Wilson leading the offensive push, scoring 12 and eight points, respectively. Supported by long-range shooting from Kyrel Caraig, Bryle Tan, and Manibusan, they kept the game close.

In the last 10 minutes of the first half, Blue Haus built a seven-point lead as Ibarola connected on three consecutive shots. JTM responded with a switch to man-to-man defense, forcing turnovers and allowing Balignasay to capitalize on transition opportunities, snatching the lead at halftime, 43-41.

The second half mirrored the first, with both teams exchanging baskets. Blue Haus’ Ibarola led early alongside Ragbonshe, Vargas, and Tibayan, trying to pull ahead. However, the team’s momentum faltered as four key players suffered cramps.

JTM took advantage, as Tengco, Balignasay, and Gutierrez kept their team composed and seized the advantage. In the final minutes, JTM’s flawless execution, clutch free throws, and critical defensive stops sealed the upset victory over Blue Haus, 80-76, and the well-deserved championship.

In the third-place game, Unity Trade cruised to a blowout win over Hagu Real, 71-41.
