At least some volleyball matches in certain schools were held as scheduled.
According to Mili Saiki, coach for the Saipan International School volleyball team, their team was able to play with Mount Carmel School and Calvary Christian School in the opening games yesterday.
Saiki said MCS won over SIS (Green) Middle School category in three games.
She added that MCS also won against SIS (Green) High School category in three sets.
CCA clinched a win over SIS (Blue) in the MS category in two sets, Saiki said, pointing out that SIS won over CCA in two sets as well in the High School category.
On the other hand, matches between Marianas Baptist Academy and Grace Christian Academy, Whispering Palms School and Seventh Day Adventist, and GCA and Saipan Community School were canceled either due to bad weather condition or conflict of schedules.
“We saw a good volleyball and a lot of improvement in both teams,” Saiki mentioned.
Covarrubias is glad the games opened regardless of the cancellation, or rescheduling of matches due to the rainy weather that soaked outdoor volleyball courts in some schools.
Covarrubias noted that most volleyball matches in private schools are usually held outdoors.
Variety asked Covarrubias if power outages would be a problem for the games also; she answered no, saying their outdoor volleyball matches do not require electronic scoreboards to carry out the games.
Still, the COPSSA chairwoman emphasized the need for volunteer referees to officiate the volleyball games.
Earlier, Covarrubias said coaches from COPSSA member-schools stand as referees for the games.
“I welcome all players to put their best foot forward,” Covvarubias stated in a phone interview.
She also encourages participants to demonstrate sportsmanship as this is a major factor COPSSA always aim to instill in its member schools.
“I am thankful for all coaches for instilling sportsmanship,” Covarrubias said. “Big thanks also to the other three committee members of COPSSA.”
The three members are: Sean Maycock (Vice Chairman from SDA); Becca Newman (Secretary from SIS); and Vanessa Pritchard (Treasurer from CCA).
