After a month of various youth activities, which included the DYS Summer Camp, a total of 16 youth teams from different age groups were on hand to compete in the three-on-three youth basketball competition, which saw three different age divisions duke it out.
In the U-12 division, Shorties came out on top as they defeated We Are True in the age group’s finals, 21-14.
The U-12 champions consisted of C.J. Morales, who was the game’s top-scorer with 13 points, Maeog Metran, Joshua Alfred, and Kenji Abobo.
The F-Rollers topped the U-15 field with their win against Boys To Win in a blowout, 21-4, in the division’s championship game.
The game was a lopsided one as the U-15 champions had the game in wraps as they dominated their opponents in the first half, 12-2, and limited them to another two points in the second half. Deon Sabino top scored for the F-Rollers with seven points of the team’s balanced scoring output.
In the final divisional competition in the tournament, John Cenir, John Darag, Mike Taitano, and Dixon Kwon of TUGZ defeated the Big 3 with a ten-point win, 24-14.
A fourth division for family games was cancelled due to inclement weather that afternoon.
DYS official and event organizer Abner Venus expressed his appreciation for people who made the event and the 2011 DYS Summer Camp successful ventures.
“On behalf of the Division of Youth Services, we would like to thank all the players that competed in the DYS-FIBA 33 Youth Basketball Tournament, people who assisted us with this event, and all the volunteers and participants of the 2011 DYS Summer Camp,” Venus told reporters in an email.
He also expressed his thanks to BANMI Referees Association President Gabriel White, the FIBA-certified referees who officiated during the competition, Rollers Basketball Club’s Joe and Verna Diaz, and Chris Aguinaldo.
Venus sent a special thanks to the NMC AHEC, Elias Rangamar, and Cultura Athletics.
