ED Manglona ended the Amigos Golf Club 2024 season with a bang by clinching the coveted Ace of Aces title. He received the perpetual trophy during an awards banquet at Pepoy’s Cafe & Restaurant on Friday.
Throughout the two-day ace of aces tournament, the nine monthly ace winners of 2024 vied for the title at Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.
On day 1, Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, Manglona, 71, struggled on the greens of the West Course, committing eight bogeys and making five pars for a gross score of 93.
However, with a handicap of 16, his net score of 77 brought him back into contention.
On Day 2 of the tournament, Manglona returned to the course with a positive mindset and showed significant improvement in his overall performance. He committed only three bogeys and sank one birdie. His brightest moments came in his putting game, as he finished the final 11 holes with 11 consecutive pars, achieving a gross score of 83.
His 16 handicap gave Manglona a net score of 67 and a total net score of 144, which was enough for an epic comeback as he clinched the 2024 Ace of Aces title and a $300 cash prize.
It was the first time Manglona had won the coveted title in his 22 years as an Amigos Golf Club member.
“The club is just full of camaraderie, fellowship, and good friends and we all have fun playing nearly every Sunday, especially during qualifying and ace events,” Manglona said in his remarks at the awards banquet.
“Thank you Amigos and members for participating and I’m looking forward to continuing playing with them. Wishing them all the best. I’ve done what I needed to do but I will definitely try to defend my title,” he added.
Second place saw a two-way tie between Domingo Atalig and Frank Sablan, both with a net total of 146. They were followed by Peter “Dung” Tenorio with 147, Joe Sablan Jr. with 148, Nick Guerrero with 152, Sherlyn Jones and Fred Salavaria tied at 153, and Tony Satur with 164.
The results of the non-ace tournament will be featured in the next edition of Variety.
