TEAM NMI saw action in the Davis Cup for the first time and performed well, beating three teams before losing to the Philippines, 1-2, in the finale between the top teams of Pools B and C at the Bahrain Tennis Federation tennis courts in Isa Town, Bahrain.
The Philippines’ Eric Olivarez Jr. dominated the NMI’s Robbie Schorr, 6-1, 6-0, but the NMI’s Colin Sinclair triumphed against the Philippines’ Alberto Lim, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. In the doubles match, however, Schorr and Sinclair were defeated by the Philippines’ Francis Alcantara and Ruben Gonzales, 5-7, 1-6.
Before the match against the Philippines, the NMI was on a roll.
In its first match, the NMI swept the Maldives, 3-0. Schorr trounced Muhammad Nazih, 6-1, 6-0, while Sinclair overpowered Abdulla Fazeel, 6-2, 6-1.
In the doubles match, the NMI’s Colin Ramsey and Tomas Abel outlasted Mohamed Rasheed and Aiham Shiyam, 6-1, 7-5.
Against Bhutan, the NMI scored another 3-0 sweep.
Schorr took down Tashi Dorji, 6-2, 6-1, and Sinclair routed Tenzin Dorji, 6-2, 6-0, while Abel and Ramsey emerged victorious against Pema Norbu and Sonam Tobgye, 6-4, 7(7)-(0)6.
Th NMI’s third consecutive win was against Laos, 3-0.
Schorr outplayed Somphone Songbandith, 6-1, 6-0, Sinclair bested Sataporn Simmalavong, 6-0, 6-4, while Abel and Ramsey triumphed over Ananda Khamphoumany and Songbandith, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
“The Davis Cup experience has been great. Being a part of this team gives me a lot of motivation — I get a lot of support,” said Schorr. “Everyone has been playing really well. This is the first Davis Cup for the NMI and I’m proud to be part of this team and for our nation.”
