Organized by Northern Marianas Islands Volleyball Association’s Mili Saiki, the seminar is free and open to private and public school students between the ages of 12-18. It will be held at the Marianas High School gymnasium and will start from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“We heard that the coach (Wade) from the University of Hawaii was going to hold a workshop in Guam, so we requested if he can come over here,” said Saiki.
No prior experience is required for all participants; however, a waiver form must be submitted before or on the day of the event. Students may pick up waivers from their respective coaches or may download the form from www.nmivolleyball.org.
Wade was the head coach of the University of Pacific’s women’s volleyball team from 2007-09, and was the UoH’s women’s volleyball team’s assistant coach from 1995-2007. In 1991, he was an assistant volleyball coach at California State University: Fullerton before starting the Southern California Volleyball Institute in 1993.
“It’s gonna be great, and it’s gonna be an inspirational clinic to all those who can attend. It’s better if they pre-register in advance so we can find out how many will come. We are very excited and hope that everyone shows up,” said Saiki.
“We are asking principals if they can let their students out early so they can come at the start of the clinic,” she added.
Also joining Wade in the Clinic are Guam’s national volleyball team’s head coach Chris Shepherd and St. John’s Middle School’s girls volleyball team’s head coach Ashley Watanabe.
“This is a dynamic opportunity rarely seen in the CNMI,” posted Laurie Peterka on the NMIVA’s website. The one-day, four-hour clinic will focus on drills, raising mental awareness during games, “identifying critical aspects of raising local playing standards to meet collegiate, national, and international expectations,” and “discussion on training expectations and discipline required for those students wishing to play at UoH or other universities,” according to the NMIVA. Around 40-50 participants are expected to show up.
Students must wear proper attire – most preferably, gym clothes and athletic shoes. All standard rules from MHS and the Safe Haven program will apply.
