Hee, Yu rule Point Break Open

Local competitors battled it out with international riders from Japan and Korea at PIC’s Flowrider. Suzuki Yu dominated the Men’s Open Division after taking out local rider AJ Sablan and Korea’s Jung Doo Kyo in the finals round. Sablan placed second, followed by Kyo. Hee proved to be a formidable opponent after beating female riders Minerva Cabrera and Yasuko Okuwaki in the Women’s Open finals.

The Men and Women’s Divisions attracted the most riders in the event. Others competed for the top spot in the Kids, Grommet’s, and Stand Up Open divisions.

While the Men and Women’s qualifiers were held on Friday, the main events for all divisions were played on Saturday.

Derek Gersonde established himself as the victor for the Stand Up Open, followed by Keoni Ichihara and Dan Westphal. Competitors in the Kids and Grommets Divisions were merged as one category, where Ryou Min Kyu earned first place, Quintin Ramsey placed second, and Will Johnson placed third.

The six and a half hour competition attracted numerous tourists at PIC, including Korea’s Flowriding Association President Andy Yoon. Yoon was among the five judges present at the competition, which included Korean, Japanese, and American representatives. Aside from the top three winners in each category, the Monster Trick and Delta Spirit Awards were also granted to distinguished riders.

This is currently PIC’s 12th annual Point Break competition, and also its fourth year to host the challenge to international riders.

The 2010 Point Break Open was sponsored by a host of companies which include Monster, DFS Galleria Saipan, Docomo Pacific, Boarderline, Delta Airlines, Quiksilver, BSEA Sunsports, Gatorade, Pepsi, Triple J, and PIC Saipan.
