ANSON Jones of Asahi, which claimed the 2024 Belau Amateur Softball Association League championship, was named the Finals’ Most Valuable Player at the Dandan baseball field on Sunday.
Jones was behind Asahi’s epic comeback in game 1 with a walk-off double RBI (going 2-3 with three RBIs) and 3-5, three RBIs and two homeruns in game 2.
“It feels good to play with the team in my first year,” Jones said in an interview. Asked about the league, he said, “I like it — it’s 40 and above, that’s my age.”
Jones stopped playing baseball at the age of 18, but returned to the game after 20 years. He also decided to play softball and the rest, as they say, is history.
Joining the list of individual awardees were Peliliu’s Cartfield Sablan as the Regular Season MVP and Batting Champ (39 for 57 for a .684 average); Peliliu’s John Terlaje as the Runs Scored Champ (34); Wazzup’s Joe Lizama and Asahi’s John Taitano as the Doubles Champs (10); Tokahao’s Clint Quitugua and Asahi’s Suo Matsutaro as the Triples Champs (4); SUFA’s Audie Maratita and Man Amigos’ Manny Sablan as the Homerun Champs (13); SUFA’s Audie Maratita as the RBI Champ (44); Hagu Lamun’s Opong Celis as the Earned Run Average Champ (6.567 ERA); and Saipal’s Leo Bobai as the Strikeout Champ (43).
