THE upcoming Red Ribbon 5K: Racing Toward a Nicotine-Free Future is more than a typical road race. This youth-led event, focused on substance use prevention and promoting healthy, vape-free lifestyles, will take place Saturday at 6:30 a.m. at the Garapan Fishing Base.

Organized primarily by the CNMI Youth Congress in partnership with the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation’s Division of Public Health, the event puts young voices at the forefront of this advocacy effort. It aligns with National Red Ribbon Week, one of the largest drug prevention campaigns in the United States, emphasizing youth vaping and substance use awareness.

The Red Ribbon 5K is free for all participants, including registration and t-shirts. Participants will also receive red-ribbon themed wristbands, pens, pins, and stickers to reinforce the event’s message. Color powder stations along the route, music, and celebrations before and after the race will create a festive, visually exciting atmosphere.

The 5K course begins and ends at the Garapan Fishing Base, with a turnaround point across from the McDonald’s bus stop near the Quartermaster area. Student volunteers will staff color stations, offering water and encouragement. The event welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels, with a minor competitive element: medals will be awarded to the top overall finishers and the top three high schoolers.

“This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of our amazing partners and sponsors, including Run Saipan, the CHCC Division of Public Health, and other local organizations that have helped bring this vision to life,” the CNMI Youth Congress said. “Thank you to PIC Saipan, CNMI Public School System, the Mayor’s Office, Joeten Superstore, Triple J, and Tan Siu Lin Foundation for promoting wellness and youth empowerment.”
