TURNING severe adversity into an unforgettable journey of resilience, the Saipan G-Rollers made an emphatic statement on the regional hardwood over the weekend while competing under extreme conditions at the Mall Ball ’26: 3×3 Summer Circuit High School Tournament, held at the packed Micronesia Mall Center Court on Guam.
Despite a heartbreaking exit in the playoff rounds, the young men from Saipan returned home with their heads held high, having earned widespread respect as the tournament’s ultimate underdogs.
The G-Rollers’ journey began long before the first whistle. Training on Saipan had been grueling following the devastating impact of Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which left local communities without functional indoor facilities or organized leagues. Forced to practice on rough outdoor street courts during 6 a.m. sessions, the team had to build everything from the ground up. From designing their own training regimens to self-funding the trip through personal savings and strict budgeting, the squad learned valuable lessons in discipline and independence before ever stepping foot on Guam.
The challenge intensified immediately before the tournament. The G-Rollers traveled as a four-man unit consisting of team captain Enzo Sasamoto, Patrick Guerrero, Austin Hoepner, and Keanu Silva. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, one player was unable to compete on game day. Facing an exhausting tournament schedule with no substitutions available, the remaining three players had to rely entirely on heart, conditioning, and willpower.
Despite being shorthanded, the Saipan squad shocked spectators by opening its campaign in dominant fashion.
In their debut game, the G-Rollers shook off early nerves and established their defensive presence, securing a crucial opening victory.
Game 2 proved to be their signature moment of the tournament. In one of the most thrilling highlights of the event, the G-Rollers mounted a fierce comeback against their opponent. With the game tied at 15-15 in the final seconds, Enzo Sasamoto etched his name into Mall Ball lore by sinking a buzzer-beating two-pointer to secure a dramatic 17-15 victory.
Fueled by that momentum, the G-Rollers carried their form into Game 3 on Saturday morning, completing a perfect 3-0 run in pool play and surprisingly earning the No. 1 seed heading into the single-elimination playoffs.
Their fairy-tale run came to an end in the knockout round as the physical toll of playing consecutive high-intensity 3×3 games without substitutions ultimately caught up with the short-handed roster. The team was eliminated from contention for the championship.
Still, the sentiment surrounding the team upon its return was anything but defeat.
“Overall, it was not satisfying to come home without the first-place trophy, but we are proud of what we were able to achieve as underdogs,” Sasamoto said in an interview with Variety. “We exceeded expectations and set a good standard for Saipan basketball. We know what we need to work on — the grind doesn’t stop; it only gets more intense.”
The G-Rollers expressed gratitude to the Guam community and event organizers at Clutch Guam and Micronesia Mall for an unforgettable experience. More importantly, the team hopes its resilience in the face of post-typhoon adversity serves as a spark to help revive basketball on Saipan.
