Mafnas, Manibusan victors in Rites of Passage 9

Trench Tech Guam’s Pete Alvarez started the night off by gaining his second win after defeating Pete Ayuyu in the first round via strikes.

Trench Tech’s Jose Mafnas improved his 1W-1L record after beating Syl Teregeyo in the second round via strikes during their middle weight super fight. Mafnas left the building with a smile on his face, stating that his confrontation with Teregeyo was a “good challenge.”

The crowd watched in awe during the night’s main event when Guam’s Matt Manibusan caught Giovanna Sablan off-guard with a vicious guillotine choke, making Sablan tap out almost immediately.

Rites of Passage 9 would not be complete without the heavyweight show down featuring Ton Sablan and Franklin Faisao. The two were an even match during the first round, where Faisao caugh Sablan with strikes while Sablan tried to take him to the ground. The fight ended when Faisao defeated Sablan via referee stoppage due to strikes.

One of the highlights of the night belonged to the exhibition kickboxing match between Tinian’s Regino Mundo and Team Zalaka’s Jacob Ilo. The referee declared both kickboxers winners after the two battled it out through all their rounds.

Several fighters conquered in their debuts during the event, which include Prescot Cabrera, Victor Norita, and Tinian’s Zackary Rhodes and Mike Reyes.

Cabrera was matched against John Ilo from Team Zalaka. Referee Tony D’Angelo removed a point from Cabrera for grabbing Ilo’s neck, but eventually claimed Cabrera the victor in the second round after applying a rear-naked choke on Ilo.

Josh Martin suffered his first loss from Tinian ZengZung’s Conrad Manglona, who now boasts an undefeated 2W-0L record.

After nearly missing out on ROP 9 due to no available fighters, Mark Nuique ended up continuing his perfect 4 wins and no loss record when defeating Kevin Kaipat via strikes in the first round.

Josh Cruz and George Manglona sent the crowd cheering off their seats after being the only competitors who pushed their fight to an extra round. Cruz won the match by decision.

Spectators thought that the grueling fight between “Bad” Brad Palacios and “Tabi” Jay Muna would go on into the second round. Unfortunately for Muna, the referee had to declare Palacios the winner due to Muna’s knee injury.

Craig “Earthquake” Borja from Tinian defeated Jason “Ground Maintenance” Teregeyo after applying a textbook triangle choke in the first round. Borja now looks forward for another win to go along with his untarnished 3 win, no loss record.

The crowd roared in favor of Rick 2 Slik San Nicolas during his 205-lb fight against Sully Stone. Stone gained the upper hand in the first round, after dealing a clean strike to San Nicolas’ face. In the second round, Stone finished him off with a choke, causing him to tap out. This was their second scheduled match. San Nicolas was unable to show up in a previous Trench Tech event against Sully Stone, causing Stone to win by default.

After delivering a vigorous night to the audience, Trench Tech President Cuki Alvarez urges MMA fans to look forward to Trench Tech’s next event on October 8, featuring Trench Warz 13 “Vengeance.”
