THIS Saturday, June 8, the Marianas Surf Skate League will host its 2nd Annual Marianas Skate Series at Garapan Skate Park.

Three events will keep skaters of all ages busy from morning to noon. Kicking off the competition from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. is the youth clinic, which is open to all ages, focusing on the basics of skateboarding

Then from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., a “Jam Session” will be held. Beginners will compete for the best score within two minutes. At stake are a trophy and a skateboard deck.

Next is the Expert Class event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It will follow the “2/5/3” format in which the score from a skater’s best 45-second run is added along with the two best tricks landed out of five attempts.

The competitors will go through a qualifier round followed by the top four competing for the cash prize of $125, a trophy, and a skateboard deck.

This year, a “Game of Skate” division has been added to the series. Similar to HORSE in basketball, skaters must match each other’s tricks to “stay alive.”

For their part, the C2 Skate Crew donated $50 to the C2 Challenge in which the first rider to land any 540 Spin/Shove It variation wins the cash.

As for the Game of Skate, which will begin at 1 p.m., the grand prize is $125.

Registration will be open until 30 minutes before the scheduled competition category starts.

The 2023 champion, Sean Gil, will defend his title this weekend. “He’s been practicing and ready for the challenge. He’s only 18 years old but skates with authority and confidence. We’re very proud of him,” said event organizer Edward Manibusan.

The Marianas Surf Skate League would like to thank this year’s sponsors — Marpac, Pokka, C2 Skate Crew, Saipan Surf Company, Salty Skin Pacific, Local Bones, Caravan of Food, Mariana Arts, Sois, DLNR-Parks and Recreation and All-Star Sporting Goods — for supporting the effort to promote skateboarding, surfing, and active lifestyles for the youth.

Among the vendors that will be present at the event is Tupu Cane Juice.
