Marpac, CHCC are semis bound

MARPAC and CHCC came out victorious over their respective adversaries in the quarterfinal games of the 2024 R&J Wine and Liquor Inter-Government/Business League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Monday.

Marpac outhustled PSS, 95-80, while CHCC stunned CPA, 75-68,

Against Marpac, PSS excelled in the in-and-out play orchestrated by Preston Basa, who posed a threat from beyond the arc, scoring one triple and driving his way inside where he executed an and-one play. For their part, teammates Melvin Sakisat and Maverick Itibus chipped in from the free throw line.

But Marpac’s scoring duo had an answer. Coby Santos delivered a three-pointer and exhibited his efficiency from inside with midrange shots while Chioni Dela Cruz took care of the fastbreak finishes and scored a triple to give his team a one-possession lead, 22-20.

PSS held their own throughout most of the second period, with Basa and Sakisat remaining effective. Marpac then turned up the pressure on the defensive end, converting turnovers into points with unanswered finishes to seize a double-digit advantage, 53-39.

Marpac continued firing on all cylinders, with Greg Sablan joining the onslaught by sinking two treys, while teammate John Diaz knocked down a pair of jumpers to push the lead to nearly 20 points.

Although PSS’ defensive efforts managed to limit Marpac’s output in the fourth and final quarter, they struggled to match that intensity on offense and ultimately fell, 80-95.

As soon as CHCC took the lead, they never looked back. Jack Lizama led the offense throughout the first half with a reliable jumpshot, punishing defenders with 15 points to put his team ahead, 34-23.

CPA nearly mounted a rally in the third period, with Donovan Brennan unstoppable as he poured in 16 points to bring his team within two possessions. However, CHCC’s Sean Apasan, Maverick Saures, and Lizama came through with crucial shots to secure the victory.
