Mount Carmel School’s Aubrey Quitugua gets fouled as she goes up for the shot during a girls middle school division game of the IT&E Interscholastic Basketball League SY23-24 at the Marianas High School gym.
MOUNT Carmel School and Chacha Ocean View Middle School defeated their respective opponents in the girls middle school division of the IT&E Interscholastic Basketball League SY23-24 at the Marianas High School gym on Monday.
MCS fought hard to outlast Francisco M. Sablan Middle School in an overtime thriller, 19-16.
In the first half, the solo work of Sierrah Manahane was all that FMS needed as she handed her team the lead by scoring six points. Defensively, they were relentless as they harassed MCS from one end of the court to the other, allowing only two made shots while FMS’ Mickaenna Nishimura added an extra bucket for a two-possession lead before going into halftime, 8-4.
Despite FMS’ dominant start, they fell apart in the second half. Their aggressiveness came at a cost as they started to commit fouls, which sent MCS to the foul line. Point guard Aubrey Quitugua delivered four points from the charity line to close the distance.
While holding FMS to just five points and with the help of Anjoelena Villagomez’s three points, MCS pulled a comeback and tied the game, 13-13, forcing the extra period.
FMS’ Manahane seemed to have found her second wind as she managed to shed some light with three crucial points. Unfortunately, the light was quickly taken away by MCS as Quitugua answered with back-to-back triples to bag the win with style, 19-16.
Chacha vs Tanapag
Chacha Ocean View Middle School, for its part, took down Tanapag Middle School, 14-10.
Although the game started off slow, the action picked up in the second half. TMS relied on the scoring ability of Kayshlie Aguon who carried her team by scoring all of its 10 points. But she was outnumbered by Chacha’s teamwork which contributed to its eventual victory.
Also joining the winner’s circle were Hopwood Middle School, which overpowered Dandan Middle School JV, 27-11; and Grace Christian Academy, which trounced Dandan Middle School, 27-13.
