With the sufficient amount of participation, the Basketball Sports Clinic could start as early as next week, and will take place every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The clinic would utilize the Koblerville Basketball Court, located right beside the KYLC.
The KYLC provides sports and recreation to youth within the Koblerville area, and is headed by Vern Manglona. It is supported by the Youth Affair’s Office from the Office of the Governor.
Mesa and Manglona hope that they could begin the sports clinic before the beginning of School Year 2010-11, which lands on September 7.
According to Manglona, the clinic would offer a very good means in giving children and teens something to do for the rest of the summer. With crime rates rising around the island, the clinic would provide a form of safe haven that would get kids off the streets and into a more proactive way of living.
If all goes well, an after-school program could also be offered in helping the youth prepare themselves for their sport of interest.
Mesa is currently active as a referee in multiple basketball associations, including the UFO, UBA, and BANMI. With his experience in the field, he intends stir a sense of sportsmanship to the children by educating them about basketball and any other sport that may interest them in the future.
The Kobler Youth Learning Center has been playing an active role in the community for the past few years, with parents and teens doing their part in maintaining the facility. Children often go to the center to play table tennis and other activities, as well as complete their school assignments with the facility’s equipment.
Last simmer, Mesa also helped in organizing an island-wide sports clinic with Price Costco.
