MARIANAS High School varsity is still the team to beat in the boys high school division of the NMIVA-PSS Interscholastic Volleyball League SY23-24 as they bested the visiting Tinian and Rota teams at the MHS gym on Friday to improve their record to five wins.
In their match, MHS and Tinian Jr/Sr High School exchanged blows in a fast-paced thriller. TIN’s strength was their defensive awareness as they withstood most of MHS’ attacks, but they lacked the offensive prowess needed to keep the possession alive. With each TIN mistake, MHS capitalized with powerful spikes to gain a comfortable distance.
TIN attempted to close the distance, but it was a bit too late as MHS stayed aggressive to maintain the advantage en route to their fifth consecutive victory, 25-17.
An hour later, MHS faced Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr/Sr High School.
In the first few possessions, both teams tried to find their rhythm. As the game progressed, MHS started to control the pace as Mokyang Kim, Juruel Magtalas, Lowell Lumauag, Yeshaiah Coleman and Jerome Manzon played with more aggression. On offense, they utilized all three touches to set up several spike finishes while on defense, they covered the weakside and attempted to block every spike return to gain the upper hand. RHI tried to turn the tide but were set back by their own errors and had to settle for defeat, 14-25.
MHS II also remains undefeated with a total of five wins after defeating RHI II, 29-27, and TIN II, 25-15.
