MARIANAS High School Yellow and Saipan Southern High School JV earned their first win in the boys high school division of the IT&E Interscholastic Basketball League SY23-24 at the Marianas High School gym on Wednesday.
MHS Blue Yellow edged MHS Blue in a thriller of game, 28-27.
MHS Blue’s Stephen Diyco and Derek Rangamar lit up the scoreboard, each scoring four points while MHS Yellow’s Carl Sanchez led his team with six points.
MHS Yellow’s Rouvick Quizon kept the fuel burning in the last few minutes of the first half with four points, but MHS Blue’s Louis Rectitud and Hilario Palino combined for five points to gain the lead, 15-13.
In the second half, MHS Blue’ Mark Caponpon ignited the fire with the opening bucket while Peyton Basa heated up with five points, including an and-one play.
However, the persistence of MHS Yellow gradually paid off as their proper ball movement created shot opportunities for Sanchez who delivered six crucial points to tie the game, 27-27.
MHS Blue then committed an untimely foul which sent Joseph Paraiso to the line where he split the free throw attempts to gain a one-point lead that sealed the deal for MHS Yellow, 28-27.
SSHS JV vs MCS JV
Saipan Southern High School JV nabbed their first win of the season by slipping past Mount Carmel School JV, 24-22.
Although SSHS JV led by five points in the first half, MCS JV displayed proper defense in the second to stay alive.
SSHS JV’s Marino Santos then delivered a game-saving bucket followed by a free-throw shot. Teammate Danny Defang, for his part, split his free-throw attempts, which was enough to secure the win.
