Mix A Lot’s Pagarao hauled more than 15 points in the last five minutes to down the Party Rockers, 62-53 during their finals match of the 2011 Women’s Summer Basketball League at the Tan Siu Lin Sports Complex last Friday.
Jeraldine Castillo piled three quick personal fouls to slow Pagarao. This however, gave the Mix A Lots ample time to recover and set up their plays.
Pagarao’s momentum started after a layup past Melody Johnson midway through the second half. Two three-pointers, one layup, and a free throw later, the Rockers lost their offensive edge.
Melody Johnson committed an unsportsmanlike foul in an attempt to steal the ball, but her efforts went in vain – the Mix A Lots had already packed a nine-point lead to secure the title.
“Basically for the second half we just had good defense and good passing. I told my teammates not to waste the ball,” said Pagarao after the game.
“Every time we get the ball, we take the chance to score. I told them to shut down their rebounder and their three-pointer, because they were killing us.”
The Rockers thrived on slightly better passing in the first half and surpassed their foes, 27-28. Castillo bagged two three-pointers and Kaylani Lebria and Kriz Gozon scored one apiece for an early 12 points.
Pagarao briefly slipped on the defense, losing the ball to Johnson and Rachel Abrams. The Rockers took final possession in the first 20 minutes and had eight seconds to stretch their lead. Johnson however, was flanked by Madeleine Alegre and Mercedes Mesa before she could reach the basket.
Pagarao top-scored with 31 points, Mesa earned 13, Alegre scored 10, and Nikita Hofschneider posted eight.
Castillo, Marianas High School student, led the Rockers with 20 points while Melody Johnson scored 10.
Last Wednesday, the Mix A Lots eliminated team Aye Par Battay, 65-43 to advance from the semifinals.
“Our performance for the season was pretty okay. Overall we did a pretty good job and my team worked hard to earn first place,” added Pagarao.
Selected players from the women’s league will also take part in the upcoming 20th Annual Rotary Basketball League.
