My Line Call: 7 tips to modernize your tennis game

1) Play the open stance. There are two reasons why you have to do this for your forehand and backhand shots. You can whip the ball with your shoulders hips and legs supporting the hit and achieve power.  Another reason is that you can easily recover from your next shot.

2) Visualize the ball before contact. Top players stop watching the ball when they feel they have the right position and distance to deliver the racket into it. The reason is that you can’t really see what happens next after the last 18 inches before impact. That is why they can even close their eyes and still hit the ball.

3) Forget the sweet spot. At least for your topspin forehand and backhand strokes.   Modern players hit the ball at the top of their rackets and roll the ball down the bottom. That is why professional racket stringers will tell you that the string breaks on the upper side and not in the center of the string bed.

4) Spin your groundstrokes. The ball clears safely the net, lands very much inside the baseline, and kicks high on the bounce. This kind of ball movement will not only provide your game steadiness and better result. Putting spin on your ball will also give you time if you are a slow player.

5) Use thin grip. Pros are now using thin racket grip. The thin grip gives them a lot of spin in the shot. They call also maneuver the racket with minimum difficulty, particularly at the net. Try to watch a pro in action and see his fingers totally wrap around the racket handle.

6) Delay your taking back your racket. Wait until the ball is close to you. If you are looking for power in your game, try to pull your racket back when the ball is near you. Ask your coach about this if you are attending a tennis class.

7) Stop hitting the ball early. At the rate the ball is being hit nowadays, hitting the ball early requires your best for the day. And if your best is not there, the result is nowhere to be found. Watch how the pros take care of the ball at hand. If the ball lands short, they move forward and hit it. If it is deep, they move back and wait for the ball to reach their hitting zone before they blast it.
