Neck-and-neck finish for Tenorio, Sublemente

Both road bikers notched first and second place in the men’s road bike category, with Tenorio coming first at one hour, 40 minutes, and 30.03 seconds.

Sublemente was no more than a second behind at 1:40:30.72.

Dominating the 50-kilometer course, Tenorio took the top spot since leaving Pacific Islands Club, but it was only near the Kingfisher Golf Links that Sublemente reached the race leader.

“Basically we helped each other out by doing intervals. We just let one guy stay behind and 30 seconds later, he’d go past the other rider. It helps for a faster time,” said Tenorio, who also ended last month’s Bike For Life race alongside Mieko Carey.

Sublemente preferred to join the mountain bike division but his mountain bike was already packed for the 2011 XTERRA World Championship in Maui, Hawaii.

Aldrin Sta. Ana settled for third place after coming in at one hour, 43 minutes, and 39.38 seconds. Trailing him were Ariel Garcia (1:46:40.94) and Alexander Gordon (1:46:40.95).

In the women’s road bike category, first place winner Heather Kennedy nearly beat the two-hour mark with 2:00:18.69.

In a barefoot fashion, second place finisher Kimiko Hasegawa ran the final stretch leading to the finish line after suffering a flat tire. Sprinting with her bike beside her, Hasegawa timed in at 2:23:06.59. Angie Mister entered the women’s top three with two hours, 23 minutes, and 50.81 seconds.

In the men’s mountain bike category, Nap Dizon beat 64 other cyclists for the finish line with 1:42:12. Charlie Sendin and Noel Altamirano followed with 1:47:52.22 and 1:50:12.31, respectively.

Joann Salazar posted two hours, 18 minutes, and 49.15 seconds to top the women’s mountain bike division. Maricel Krud earned second place at 2:21:19.38 while Susan Marchitti placed third at 2:28:57.41.

Mieko Carey, who was hoping to compete before leaving to Hawaii, couldn’t join the race after a knee injury last Thursday.

She however, confirmed she “ok” for Maui, and will compete in the XTERRA World Championship alongside Sublemente on October 23.

The Pre-HOM drew in 87 riders overall and served as practice for riders competing in the actual 100km Hell of the Marianas race on December 3.
