New basketball league to open in September

The SBL says this new league will have a “high level of basketball competition” that promotes camaraderie and safety through active play.

The league, which says it is the only program with consecutive seasons, promotes itself as entertaining and fun, allows its participants to have the feel of being professional basketball players, and supports the local community with charitable beneficiaries.

Its objectives include ensuring basketball safety in outdoor play by promoting discipline and friendship between players, coaches, team managers, and fans, maintaining basketball competitiveness in the CNMI through consecutive seasonal play, establishing a self-sustaining basketball program, and helping the Garapan community with outreach projects to help the environment and the CNMI youth by using the game of basketball as a “medium for growth.”

It is open to all nationalities and is hoping for nine teams in its men’s division (18 and above) and six teams for its junior division/developmental program (under 16).

Its first season is slated for this September and will run through this December. A second season is scheduled for the spring of 2012, running through April and ending in June, while a third season is proposed for September to December 2012.

The first meeting of all interested coaches and team managers will be on August 19, 2011 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the  Garapan Development Community Center.
