Partners Budhi Gurung and Steve Lim from the CNMI had a good start after crushing Guam players Edwin and Arman by 3-0 in table no. 1 during the first round. Meanwhile, their fellow CNMI players Su Yongdong and Luke Lu defeated Palau’s Roman and Aba by 3-1 in table no. 2.
In the second round, Gurung and Lim hammered Pohnpei players Tom Antonio and Tommy lee by 3-1 while Su Yongdong and partner Luke Lu pounded Kosrae’s Joseph and Boyd by 3-0.
Following the second round was the finals, where Yongdong and Lu had to go against fellow CNMI players Gurung and Lim.
Yongdong and Lu scored 11-5, 7-11, 10-12, and 11-6 in their four games, entitling them to gold medals, while Lim and Gurung received silver.
NMI triathletes shine in Micro Games
TRIUMPH is a word closely associated to the CNMI’s triathletes after overcoming their fellow competitors last Sunday at Palau Pacific Resort during the 7th Micronesian Games.
CNMI’s Mieko Carey managed to get her hand on a gold medal after placing first in the overall and female division, while the rest of her fellow athletes received another set of gold from the team category.
Carey described the day to be “cloudy” with a wet road ahead of them. She finished the entire run with 1:14:37, followed by Leah Gilliam who received a silver medal with 1:44:59 in the women’s division.
Daly Kieran earned a gold medal for finishing first in the men’s division while Matt Mancao received a bronze medal for placing third.
The CNMI placed first in the team event with a total time of 3:38:36, followed by Palau with 4:56:37.
Meanwhile, the CNMI will be heading off against Guam today for the gold in women’s basketball.
