Golf organizations in the CNMI, Jess I. Wabol said, have young members who have been showing potentials in the monthly tournaments.
As the coordinating committee for the participation of NMI’s golf team in 2011 Pacific Games keeps itself busy on setting the criteria and tryout schedules, Wabol said they are also looking at young golfers.
Wabol, the president of Refaluwasch Golf Association said they used to have a good number of young golfers but now, only one is left—Xian Li Cui who had won a monthly RGA tournament last year.
Jay Choi another youngest member, left for Korea last month.
There’s a couple more junior golfers on the island but they have left for Korea for further training.
Wabol said that in the case of Cui, he does not think it will be possible for the teenager to join the national team this time, due to citizenship requirement.
Michael Park, who was the youngest golfer in 8th Annual HANMI Charity Golf Classic Tournament last year, is another young gun to train.
Tim Tagutchi who played in main golf events last year can join the tryout. However, the young golfer has gotten himself into basketball now.
Dung Tenorio is still participating in golf tournaments but he seems more passionate about baseball and softball.
Wabol also remembers that Frank “The Crank” Camacho used to win in golf tournaments too, but he has now devoted his time to mixed martial arts.
Wabol assures they can send a team of golfer to New Caledonia and it will be better if they can mix it up with young guns.
