NMI Masters League aiming Olympic in Sydney

Arnold Mesa who will soon take over the Masters League in basketball said 94 countries have already registered for the World Master Olympics that involves 29 sports.

He said this can be the CNMI’s chance to participate.

The CNMI, De Mesa disclosed had already been invited in the World Master Olympics in Melbourne, Australia  in 2002; in Canada in 2005 and Adelaide, Australia last year but due to lack of enough number of teams and budgetary constraints, the islands was not able to participate.

CNMI has Master League that has been around since 1998 under BANMI. It has four teams for 35-and-over, 40-and-over, 45-and-over and 50-and-over.

However, it was raised in yesterday’s meeting that Master League right now is just a sort or recreation for players in the said age brackets.

De Mesa pressed that Masters League on the island needs progress. He pointed out that with Masters League around, fathers and grandfathers can effectively play their role as model for their children on matters of healthy living and sportsmanship.

In fact, he stressed Masters League actually the role model of all other leagues.

Demesa said that looking forward to heading out to off-island tournaments like the one coming up in Sydney.

Saipan Majors League’s Tony Rogolifoi said he also plans to activate the Masters League in baseball.
