NMI U23’s courage shines in AFC loss to China

DESPITE a spirited and courageous performance against host nation China, the NMI U23 Men’s National Soccer Team ultimately fell 10-0 in their second AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifying match held Saturday in China.

While the score suggests a one-sided affair, the young NMI squad demonstrated relentless effort and discipline, leaving the field with their heads held high.

NMI’s defensive resolve was tested from the opening whistle. The team held firm, showcasing a disciplined and well-organized effort that frustrated China’s attack for much of the first half, conceding only once to trail 1-0 at the break.

As the second half unfolded, the physical demands of the match became difficult to manage. China capitalized on their fresh legs and key substitutions, overwhelming the NMI defense with relentless attacks.

Despite the mounting pressure and goals conceded, NMI contested every play but ultimately fell 10-0.

In a social media post, the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association stated, “The first half was especially impressive — against the host nation and in front of nearly 31,000 fans, that defensive effort was nothing short of inspiring.” It continued, “We are beyond proud of this group for their fight, teamwork, and resilience. To everyone back home and across the NMI — thank you for your continuous support. Your encouragement drives the team forward and means everything to us.”
