NORTHERN Marianas Athletics Secretary General Robin Sapong made his second appearance in the Olympics as a member of the World Athletics Jury of Appeal in the recently concluded Paris games.
Sapong said the selection process for the Jury of Appeal was rigorous and was overseen by the World Athletics Council of which he is a member.
Council members play a crucial role by ensuring that the most qualified and experienced individuals are chosen to serve on the jury. The council also appoints technical officials who work closely with the jury to maintain the competition’s integrity. These appointments are critical in guaranteeing that the highest standards are met throughout the event.
“I am deeply honored to have been selected as a member of the World Athletics Jury of Appeal for the Paris 2024 Olympics,” Sapong said. “This appointment was a significant responsibility, and I am proud to have contributed to ensuring that the principles of fairness, integrity and sportsmanship were upheld at the highest level of competition,” he added.
Serving on the jury during the Paris Olympics was a truly rewarding experience, he said. “It allowed me to engage directly in the resolution of disputes and uphold the rules that ensure every athlete has the opportunity to compete in an environment where consistency and fairness prevail. The experience has deepened my appreciation for the intricate balance of rules, justice and athletic excellence that defines our sport,” Sapong said.
He said it was an honor to represent Oceania Athletics and the CNMI, especially considering that the Commonwealth is not a member of the International Olympic Committee.
“Despite this, our presence and participation on such a prestigious platform highlights the dedication and passion we bring to the global athletics community. Contributing to the Olympic Games in this capacity is a testament to the strength and resilience of our athletes and officials,” Sapong said.
One of the most memorable duties he had the privilege of performing was presenting a gift during the medal presentation for the men’s discus throw event.
“This special moment allowed me to honor the incredible achievements of the athletes and to further represent Oceania Athletics and the Northern Mariana Islands on the world stage,” Sapong said.
“Being part of the World Athletics Jury of Appeal was both a privilege and a challenge that I embraced with dedication and a deep sense of duty,” he added. “Working alongside esteemed colleagues from around the world was invaluable, and together we supported the success of the Paris 2024 Olympics while upholding the values that make the Olympic Games a global symbol of excellence and unity. I am grateful for this incredible opportunity and the experience it provided.”
