THE NMI’S Tania Tan has once again pushed past her limits, setting a new personal best record in the Start to Park 10K of the 2024 Honolulu Marathon in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday, Dec. 8.
Race day was favorable to Tan, with 89% humidity and no wind. The 23-year-old clocked 00:18:31 at the halfway point and powered through to finish with a time of 00:36:46, averaging 03:41 per km to place fifth overall.
Filling the top three list were professional athletes. In first place was G. Larkin with a time of 00:33:32 followed by Annika Reiss at 00:33:39, and Regan Yee at 00:33:55.
“I was surprised but happy with the time I ran,” Tan said. “I was also surprised to come in the top 5 overall for the women’s category. This was my first time running in the Start to Park 10k of the Honolulu marathon.”
She added, “I feel honored to have competed in this event, and especially grateful for my friends Jacob Melnick, who ran the whole race with me, my training partner Kathryn Watt…in Hawaii, and everyone else in Kaka‘ako Run Club.”
Tan said her new personal record was not the result of specific preparation before the race, but rather the consistency she has built through training and competing season after season, month after month, year after year.
“It’s always nice to break a PR so I’m happy,” she said.
