Pacific Games Council meet in Noumea

Delegates from 21 Pacific Games Associations were able to attend the meeting, in addition to the NC2011 organizing committee and New Caledonia government officials.

According to the Pacific Games Council website, the delegates “voted on a number of reforms to the Games Charter, including strengthening the relationship between the Pacific Games and the International Federations through changes to the Athlete Eligibility criteria. Elections for future Pacific Games host cities will be brought forward by a year so that Games are awarded seven years before the event as per Olympic and Commonwealth Games practices.”

Winners of the 2009/10 Pacific Sports Awards were also announced during the assembly, after 36 nominations from 8 Pacific Games Associations. The awards included Outstanding Sports Administrator, given to Cook Islands’ Robert Graham, Outstanding Coach, which went to Samoa’s Stephen Betham, and several others.

New Caledonia was chosen over the Solomon Islands by the council in holding the 14th Pacific Games, during a General Assembly back in July 2005.

The Pacific Games Council will also be hosting the Pacific Mini Games, which will take place in the Cook Islands.
