Pacific Games Council officials start site inspection tour

The NMI is currently up against Vanuatu and Nauru, with Norfolk Island withdrawing its bid in May 22.

Both Lakhan and Minogue arrived yesterday afternoon and will visit several venues including Marianas High School, the Oleai Sports Complex, Kilili Beach, Hopwood Junior High School, and Coral Ocean Point, among others.

“It is my understanding that this evaluation visit will result in a recommendation to the Council,” said Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association president Michael White in an email to Variety.

“I’m certain that their evaluation will be a major consideration for the members of the Council.”

According to the PGC’s official website, election between the three Pacific Games Associations will take place in Noumea, New Caledonia in September 4 this year.

The NMI’s proposed date for the Games is during the last two weeks of June, 2017. Sports for both men and women under the bid include: athletics, football/soccer, golf, swimming, tennis, va’a (canoe), beach and indoor volleyball, baseball (men only), sailing, and triathlon.

The NMI is not new to events of this caliber, having hosted the Micronesian Games in 2006, Oceania Basketball Tournament in 2009, and Asia Pacific Regional Tournament in 2008.

Lakhan and Minogue will also conduct meetings with Gov. Benigno Fitial, Lt. Gov. Eloy Inos, and the rest of the NMI’s bid committee before leaving on Friday.
