Bennett whose previous best was 12.37 seconds and competed in the last World Championships in Osaka, Japan will be running in 200 and 100 meters sprint this time. She is joined in Korea by another promising NMI sprinter, Orrin Joseph Ogumoro Pharmin who will participate in the 100-meter run.
A resident of Kagman on Saipan, Bennett who had brought home a number of victories in past international athletic events is flying from Boise, Idaho on Thursday, NMI time, to once again prove that NMI has something to show the international athletics family.
The 21-year-old sprinter who taking up Business Major at Boise State University had to flex muscles right at the university’s track and field to prepare herself for the Daegu event.
Back home, 24-year-old Ogumoro, with guidance from coaches Eli Rangamar and Robin Sapong has been working hard as well for his first taste of the World Championships.
Busy with her studies, Bennett after she was notified two months ago of Daegu championships, was so excited that she immediately added up to her hectic schedule a daily practice right at the campus.
It was the first day of her classes yesterday and Bennett would only be able to attend a couple of days before she is excused to participate in the World Championship to bring pride not only for the NMI but for the entire academe in Boise State University as well.
Bennett and Ogumoro will be competing with 1,945 athletes representing 202 countries from Aug. 24 to Sept. 4.
“I’m extremely proud of her,” Yvonne’s father, former teacher Ambrose Bennett said in a telephone interview. I know that she is going to give her very best again,” he added.
The proud also said that his daughter has something that cannot be coached and that is “a heart of champion.”
Yvonne Bennett, she said continues to level up her feat as she now becomes a world class sprinter.
Bennett was in the same track when world champion Veronica Campbell of Jamaica led the 100 meter race in Osaka two years ago. Back then, the NMI’s sprinter clocked at 13.16 seconds to break her own 13.57 seconds record.
Also joining Bennett and Ogumoro in Daegu is Rep. Ray A. Tebuteb, Northern Marianas Athletics president.
