THE Saipan Summer Showdown Vol. 2 Tournament, hosted by the Rotaract Club of Saipan, takes place on Saturday, June 29 and is still accepting registrants, Rotaract President Richard Baleares said.
The tournament, which features Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Tekken 8, will take place at Pepoy’s Café and Restaurant at the Joeten Building across from Saipan World Resort in Susupe.
The tournament entry fee is $10 and doors open at 4 p.m.
The Tekken 8 matches are double elimination with “tournament mode” default settings. A player’s first game stage will be selected randomly. Game winners must continue playing with their selected character. Game losers may elect to switch stages and keep their character or switch character but agree to a random stage in the next round.
For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the format is one-on-one, best of three, double elimination. Losers’ semi-finals, winners’ semi-finals, and the grand finals will be best of five game play. Legal stages are Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Final Destination, Yoshi’s Story, Pokemon Stadium 2, Smashville, Kalos Pokemon League, Town & City, and Hollow Bastion.
Players must agree to the Rotaract Club of Saipan’s liability, media release, tournament etiquette, and equipment policy found here: https://tinyurl.com/Rotaract-Tourney-policy
“There was a need in the gaming community for a gaming tournament. The last one we held was two years ago,” said Rotaract Director-Elect and Committee Head Simon Necesito. “Some of our biggest problems at the time involved Covid and finding a venue. With the return of e-sports returning, we have a chance to introduce them back to the islands. We also have a lot of passionate players who need a community to come together and showcase their talents.”
Baleares said tournament victory packages are still being finalized. The deadline to register is June 29 at 4 p.m.
