Salem brothers lift SIP past Laguna, 105-61

Taking a beating in both halves, team S.U. Lions-Laguna couldn’t follow the pace and lost, 105-61 last Saturday.

Nicko Salem tallied an early nine points before capping the third quarter with 11 more. Teammate and fellow varsity player John Cenir followed suit with 14 points, scoring nine alongside Salem in the opening minutes of the second half.

Team Laguna slipped on mistakes as they hurried back and forth for possession. Landing two layups, Ankie Manalili struggled for the rebound while Jerald Habijan fell to the ground on a loose ball.

Team SIP wasted no time and took the lead on a 24-11 run in the first quarter. Paul Mariano and Jaymark De Guzman ended the first half on a combined 10 points while Jack Aranda and Adrian Palacios earned four apiece. John Darag, who added 16 points, eventually sunk two three-pointers before handing the game to Nevin and De Guzman.

Laguna’s score leader Frank Macahito hammered back-to-back layups to lift the team by eight points in the third quarter. His actions alone however, couldn’t gun down their 25-point deficit.

Despite a couple missed passes near the end, team SIP buried the hatchet and outscored Laguna, 31-22.

Overall, Nevin Salem picked up two steals, five assists, and seven rebounds. Palacios garnered three steals, one assist, one block, and seven rebounds.

Rollers 71, Jets 64

In a second game, the Filcag-Rollers defeated the AFP-Jets, 71-64.

The Rollers, who nearly forfeited due to uniform issues, took the upper hand with a four-point lead in the first quarter.

The Jets blasted four three-pointers with a free throw but fell behind on two jumper from Leo Galarse and Josh Kiyoshi. Sahj Hossain, who top scored with 23 points, tallied 12 points in the first half to bring the game to a one-point gap.

Kiyoshi later missed on a crucial layup in the third quarter as Hossain posted five more points to lift the Jets ahead, 43-44. Eugene Manglona had earlier added six points from a late-game shooting spree while James Webb fired another three-pointer.

Making up for their mistakes, the Rollers utilized fast break plays to turn the game in the last 10 minutes. Pat Torres scored seven points for a 12 total, Galarse added four, and Kiyoshi earned two on a last-second layup. Despite not making any baskets in the first three periods, Don Brennan capped the game with nine points.

Aside from Hossain, double-digit scorers Webb and Manglona garnered 12 each for the Jets.
