Sasamoto tops Micronesian Games spear fishing tryout

The 2006 Micronesian Games gold medalist was among the nine spear fishermen who are vying for the slots in this year’s Micronesian Games that will be held in Palau from August 1 to 10.

The Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club conducted the trial competition to select three NMI marine sports athletes who will represent the CNMI in the Micronesian Games.

The tryout participants went on to dive at the beach behind Aquarius Hotel in Chalan Kanoa and lurked under the crystal blue waters of Saipan lagoon from Agingan Point all the way to Garapan Lighthouse from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sasamoto said that despite the strong current, he, Morito and San Nicolas managed to make it to the next end.

Morito had to go 90 feet deep while he cruised 80 feet deep under water.

Winning the second place was Derek San Nicolas who came out with a 24.04-pound catch and rounding out the third slot was Morito Asai who caught 15.12 pounds of reef fishes.

The other participants who had barely missed the qualifying round for the Micronesia Games were Greg Sasamoto and Abraham Quitugua.

The four other people who signed up were not able to turn in their catch.

During the last Micronesian Games in 2006, Sasamoto won gold medal for the individual category. Team CNMI at the time, took the gold medal for the Team Category.

The defending champions, according to MASC are now ready to bring home the gold medals again and are very proud and anxious to represent the NMI in this year’s Micronesian Games.
